In honor of International Women’s Day, we sat down with two of the women who make SBC what it is – Tiffany Barton (General Manager) and Mary Lucas (Assistant General Manager).
Tiffany & Mary run the Front of House in Saugatuck/Douglas. They work together to make the Pub run efficiently, smoothly, and happily. They pride themselves on the solid relationships they have built with each other, their staff, and the customers of SBC.
Let’s take a minute to get to know these amazing ladies a little deeper.
How long have you both worked at Saugatuck Brewing Company?
Tiffany: 7 years in total, I started working as a Bartender on October 1, 2013 – but was promoted to my job as GM July 27, 2015.
Mary: 3 years, since July 2017.
What is your favorite part of working in the beer industry?
Mary: That nature of the people here, I love the spirit of beer enthusiasts.
Tiffany: Absolutely, and being around all of the creativity here is really inspiring. It’s so interesting to see all the different beers that are always changing, always new.
What is your favorite part about working in the Saugatuck area?
Mary: It’s beautiful here, everywhere you look. Plus, the locals are awesome and always interesting.
Tiffany: And I love the small town vibe. The locals here are all so tight. Plus then during the summer we have a huge boom of people from all over, so we get to interact with all different types of cultures, people, walks of lives, etc.
Being a woman in the beer industry can have its challenges, what has been one of the biggest challenges for you being a woman in the industry?
Tiffany: We get it every now and again that there’s a perception that we don’t know what we’re talking about.
Mary: But we’re also here at such a good time, and that perception is starting to shift.
Tiffany: It’s definitely changing from when I started. There are so many women coming into this industry, from owners to brewers to servers – it’s so good to see.
Mary: It’s good for every one of us every time another woman enters the industry.
Who are some of the women who you admire and look up to the most?
Tiffany & Mary: My mom.
Mary: But seriously, every mother that has ever been before me, and will come after me. Motherhood is hard, and we’re all amazing.
What inspired you to get into the beer business?
Tiffany: There was a part time job open as a bartender here, and I knew about beer, so I applied. Honestly, I was worried that I was going to be bored only serving beer, but I didn’t know how intimate the service would be at a brewery. You really spend a lot of time discussing different options with your customers. It adds a lot to this job.
Mary: I wanted a management position, and this place just seemed like an environment that was conducive to who I am as a person.
What’s your favorite thing to do in your free time?
Mary: Gardening, interior design and restoring my home, spending as much time as I can with my grandsons.
Tiffany: Working on my house, spending time with my family, watching my daughter dance and going to lunch with my husband, Ben.
Tiffany & Mary are just two of the incredible women who hold down the fort here at SBC. We are proud and thankful for all of the women who work every day to make SBC what it is. Today, and every day, we’re raising a glass to those women out there selling beer, making beer, serving beer, and drinking beer. Here’s to you.
